{mosimage}Bethlehem - The city of Bethlehem and its neighboring towns of Beit Jala and Beit Sahour, the surrounding villages and refugee camps throughout the governorate demonstrated from early Sunday morning. In solidarity with the Gaza Strip, the province is on strike with shops and public institutions closed. Public transportation stopped. The collective cry from this West Bank province mirrored that throughout the occupied territory.March in Beit Jala after Sunday MassJust up the hill from Bethlehem to the northwest is Beit Jala where a massive public rally was attended by hundreds of citizens. Starting after Sunday mass from the Church of St. Nicholas the march toured the streets of the city with demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags and banners condemning the occupation.Residents chanted for national unity and an end to the attacks on Gaza. “The state of internal division benefits no one other than the occupation,” a message read. To fuse together the split between the Gaza Strip and West Bank, the Bethlehem community stressed, “We are one people with the same fate and the occupation commits massacres without mercy. We will collectively achieve our rights.” Rally in Dheisheh Refugee CampSouthern Bethlehem city’s Dheisheh Refugee Camp saw hundreds of people protesting early Sunday afternoon. Young men and boys were in the highest numbers, with Palestinian flags and banners condemning occupation. They also carried party flags showing that all are together: the red of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the green of Hamas, yellow for Fateh. “We must unite and stop at once the state of division amongst brothers,” one of the demonstrators said as the crowd moved from the camp to the main road that once linked Jerusalem to Bethlehem and on to Hebron.Demonstrators also chanted against the “fake truce,” saying that “one who wants peace aims to end occupation, not enter into games.” One demonstrator said, "The Palestinian and Arab parties that are trying to search for a truce in the Gaza Strip are expressing the inability of the parties to consider themselves strong. They think of themselves as weak under the occupation that continues the crimes of 60 years.” Demonstration in Al MasraIn the southern Bethlehem villages of Al Masra and Um Salamuna, the communities that engage in weekly nonviolent demonstrations against land confiscation, the Wall and settlements were shot at today. The Sunday demonstration against the Israeli attacks on Gaza was met by rubber-coated steel bullets. Israeli soldiers shot tow people. The march roamed village roads until the point on the land that Israeli forces are confiscating. Dozens of soldiers used clubs, gas and guns against youth who began throwing stones and empty bottles. The two young men who were shot are in stable condition. Rachel’s TombAt northern Bethlehem City’s overtaken area of Rachel’s Tomb, Israeli forces fired from the sniper tower and jeeps that littered the road between Aida and Al Azzeh refugee camps. Youth threw stones and Molotov cocktails at the Wall while soldiers fired rubber-coated steel bullets and gas. No one was reported injured in this collective display of anger, despair and solidarity.Palestinian Authority security attempted to stop young people from demonstrating in order to prevent injuries, so officials said today. Three arrested in HussanOn the western side of the governorate in Hussan Village, a number of boys threw stones at Israeli settler cars that buzz through the town. Immediately Israeli military vehicles stormed Hussan and began breaking into homes under the pretext of searching for the stone-throwers. Three young people were taken to unknown locations during the early morning arrests.A similar scene to that in the Bethlehem governorate today could be found throughout the West Bank where demonstrations, strikes and mourning are ongoing in protest of the major Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
