The ceremony included remarks by Fayyad as well as a USAID representative and the mayor of Beit Sahour, the lighting of the tree, and fireworks. A band performed Christmas songs for a crowd of about 500 people. As the ceremony concluded, Fayyad took off his jacket and danced and clapped. Beit Sahour is a village of about 12,000 people southwest of Bethlehem, the traditional site of Jesus Christ’s birth. The tourism industry of the village, which is 80% Christian, burgeons as Christmas approaches.
