PNN - The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music is opening a new branch in Bethlehem. The cornerstone has been laid next to the Beit Sahour medical clinic. The Managing Director of the Bethlehem Branch, Jalil, told PNN that this project is three years in the making in consultation with the Director General of the Institute, Suheil Khoury and the Beit Sahour Municipality.
Eighteen classrooms, a large hall and theatre will be included along with administrative offices, a section for repairing musical instruments and three apartments for teachers coming from abroad. The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music is looking to expand throughout all governorates and for now this new Bethlehem branch in Beit Sahour will cover the southern West Bank. Funding for the Bethlehem branch which already has several hundred students lined up has come from UNESCO and the Institute of Music in Paris, with land donated by the Beit Sahour Municipality. The facility will not be ready for the students until 2010, which construction slated to begin within 20 days. But the mission is worth waiting for as it feeds the art community and enlivens the difficult situation through culture and music. Jalil told PNN, “It is for those who thirst for a vent in the pressure under which we live and allows us, the Palestinian people, to convey our message over the Wall and outside to the world.”
